“Greenery links neighborhoods – bridges link the city”

This project aims to create a new-look pedestrian bridge in the heart of Bangkok's central business district of Pathumwan - Khlong Toei.   This project is under the aegis of the Department of Public Works of the BMA, and UddC has the role of designing physical and social connections through a network of development partners. The vision of the project is to serve the common purpose of reviving the first pedestrian-bicycle structure in Thailand That is currently in disrepair and does not create any interaction with the context of the area.  In the absence of creative regeneration, the area presents a risk for accidents and crime. That was the challenge in the reconstruction of this green bridge area.

However, the target location has considerable potential for revitalization. UddC recognizes that bridges should do more than merely serve as a bridge for vehicular traffic. Instead, bridges should be viewed as a social space that offers seamless integration with the surrounding context.  The bridge can connect two cities, two parks, two different religious communities, while also serving as a public space that makes good use of various user groups and time periods to improve the quality of life of people in the community Bangkok at-large.

The UddC conducted a feasibility study to analyze many dimensions of the city together with organizing forums for discussion of the vision and plans with the people of the Polo and Ruamrudee Communities, representatives of places of worship, various associations, and representatives of the private sector in the surrounding area to solicit ideas and suggestions for best use of the area in the planning and design phase.

UddC worked closely with design partners in joint design regeneration of the neglected and dilapidated bridge structure to be welcoming shaded area. The Tai La Studio Studio Co. and Sukta Co. helped to interpret the green potential in terms of landscape architecture. The strategy was to raise awareness of the importance of increasing green areas for the city while addressing security issues.   The Lighting Research and Innovation Center (LRIC) designed a system for the target area that not only provides sufficient lighting that meets the standards, but also helps to create a new identity for the bridge through nighttime awareness and appreciation.
